Alongside India’s clean energy rise
Sumant's work has evolved with India's widening ambition, from mobilising capital for a new market to helping build the power systems, industrial capabilities and institutions its next phase will require.
2010–2014
INSTITUTIONAL
CAPITAL ARRIVES
The National Solar Mission made clean energy a national infrastructure priority and opened the sector to serious investment.
Sumant founded ReNew in 2011, commissioned its first wind project in 2012 and entered solar by 2014, bringing institutional capital into operating renewable assets and setting the stage for competition on cost.
2015–2019
SCALING
THROUGH THE PRICE REVOLUTION
India raised its solar target fivefold as competitive auctions drove tariffs to a record INR 2.44 per unit.
Sumant grew ReNew from 500 MW to 5 GW and led the acquisition of Ostro Energy, showing that clean power could be built cheaply and repeatedly. The question now shifted from cost to reliability.
2020–2022
PROVING
RELIABILITY AT NATIONAL SCALE
India crossed 100 GW of renewable capacity as the focus shifted from adding megawatts to delivering dependable power.
Sumant led ReNew to India’s first 400 MW round-the-clock renewable tender, while the company expanded into hydropower, storage and green hydrogen. Renewable power was beginning to deliver the reliability the grid required.
2023–2024
EARLY BET
ON SELF-RELIANCE
India began building the industrial backbone of its transition across manufacturing, transmission and green hydrogen.
Sumant took ReNew into solar-cell and module manufacturing early in the ecosystem’s growth, while the company crossed 10 GW of operating capacity. His push into manufacturing helped anchor more of the clean-energy value chain in India, adding industrial depth to the country’s renewable expansion.
2025
RISING
TO THE TOP THREE
India became the world’s third-largest country by installed renewable capacity and crossed 50 percent non-fossil power capacity five years ahead of schedule.
The platform Sumant built across generation, manufacturing and new capabilities formed part of the base on which that milestone stood. With scale achieved, the task turned to putting it to work.
2026 & beyond
POWERING
THE NEXT GROWTH FRONTIERS
India's demand is turning to green hydrogen, data centers, artificial intelligence and advanced manufacturing, all powered by reliable, domestically anchored clean energy.
Sumant is building the link between these new engines and the energy base beneath them. This is the frontier on which India's next economy will run.
