Sumant Sinha

Sumant Sinha is the Founder, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of ReNew, one of India’s largest clean energy companies and among the first from the country to list on Nasdaq. He founded it in 2011 with a conviction that India could power its growth differently, and has spent the years since proving that a clean energy company built in India can operate at global scale.

Under his leadership, ReNew has built a diversified clean energy portfolio spanning solar, wind and battery storage, with a total pipeline of close to 28 gigawatts. Having marked fifteen years of operations in 2025, the company now delivers end-to-end decarbonisation solutions, from solar manufacturing and carbon markets through to green hydrogen, which places it among the significant players in the global energy transition.

His work extends beyond the company he built. He co-chairs the World Economic Forum’s Alliance of CEO Climate Leaders, the largest CEO-led alliance on climate change, and is founding co-chair of the Bharat Climate Forum, which is working to position India as a global leader in clean technology manufacturing. He has served as President of ASSOCHAM, chaired the board of the Rocky Mountain Institute, and now chairs the CII Energy Transition and Hydrogen Council, roles that place him at the meeting point of industry, policy and international climate effort.

From the Tata Administrative Service to Citicorp and ING Barings, Sumant worked across institutions and global markets, understanding how capital follows conviction, credibility and execution.

At Suzlon, Sumant moved from finance and corporate leadership into the operating reality of energy. As the National Action Plan on Climate Change put sustainable growth on the national agenda, he saw the scale of India’s energy demand and the gap between what the nation needed and what existed.

The Entrepreneurial Journey
2011 onwards
Sumant stepped out as a first-generation entrepreneur and founded ReNew. He brought together people with different strengths, building a culture of learning from others and finding collaborative, innovative solutions to difficult problems.

Solving for the Gigawatts
Each gigawatt marked a new chapter. At 1 GW, Sumant transformed an idea into proof that renewable energy could scale in India.

The journey to 5 GW called for a new approach, as Sumant combined long-term capital, a growing solar portfolio, projects across states and acquisitions to build scale.
